Child support is the financial obligation you have to support your child as he or she matures. This requirement applies to every parent, unless parental rights have been legally terminated by the court.
How Responsibility for Child Support Is Determined
Tennessee has a set of Child Support Guidelines used by every court that deals with the subject. The Guidelines are based on an Income Shares model that establishes the dollar amount of child support obligations based on the amount of parents’ combined adjusted gross income and the number of children for whom the child support order is being established or modified. Additional factors are also part of the calculation, including but not limited to parenting time, credits for other children, and educational and special expenses.
Changing Child Support Payment Amounts
Once child support payments are set, it takes legal action to change them. A change in circumstances may necessitate a change in child support payments.
